The Project
3 Railway Arches to be converted into habitable office space using insulated glass for use by fledgling businesses run by post graduates from UMIST.
The Commission
To install insulated glass units into a steel frame to form both elevations of the arch.
The Challenge
To create transparency and a bright internal aspect whilst limiting heat loss and energy wastage at the same time as preventing the build up of heat through the glass.
The Solution
In the IGU Anders incorporated the highest specification insulated glass using the lowest "U" value Low E glass, in accordance with Part L of the Building Regulations, to minimise heat loss. Alongside this "Antisun" toughened glass was used to act as a solar control to deflect the intensity of the sun off the windows. To further increase the IGU's efficiency they were filled with argon gas giving a "U" value of 1.1W/m2K!
