Pilkington Pyrostop™ is a fire-resistant glass that acts as a barrier to flames, smoke and radiant heat, protecting lives and property on the non-fire side of the glass, allowing escape along corridors and in stairwells and compartmentalising sections of buildings from one another.
Pilkington Pyrostop™ was developed by Pilkington's German operation, Flachglas AG in the mid-1970s and was the first clear fire-resistant glass that successfully resisted both the physical properties of fire and insulated against the passage of radiant heat.
As fire resistant glass has to adhere to a very high safety standard and fire protection is of such critical importance the question arises of "how reliable and durable is the glass and does it deteriorate in performance after many years of installation?"
Pilkington Pyrostop™ glass had been installed in Aachen’s University Hospital in 1981. In 2000 a fire test was conducted on this glass by the independent Material Testing Office NRW in Germany and the glass passed easily, despite 20 years in-situ. This was done in a test rig in a furnace exactly in accordance with a standard fire test on a new glazed assembly
In 2013 Pilkington decided to further highlight the long-term reliability of their fire-resistant glasses by internally testing Pilkington Pyrostop™ manufactured and installed in fire doors at their previous HQ II Building in Gelsenkirchen in 1983.
The results were remarkable. This glass performed for 50 minutes for both integrity and thermal insulation, despite the requirement only being 30 minutes (EI30 according to EN13501-2 – the European Norm Standard). It also complied with all other current stringent requirements.
Probably unique; this fire test has proven that Pilkington Pyrostop™ is durable and reliable and doesn’t deteriorate in performance, even after being installed for 30 years.
